Look around your LinkedIn connections or over Twitter and you will doubtless find the tribe of futurists: people granted greater than average prescience, or possessed of the instruments and insight to divine where we are going.
Futurism is a fun sport: i’m not averse to playing it myself sometimes, but it pays to remember that however rosy or bleak that picture is, it is our actions in this moment that count the most.
Perhaps an act of Social Leadership is to be a ‘now-ist’ - to look at the system around us, to question (ourselves as much as others), to imagine what ‘different’ or ‘better’ would look like, and then to take the first steps on that journey, today.
Use your 60 seconds today to ask where you gaze lies: are you looking ahead, or looking down at what lies before your feet?
Both perspectives have value: ‘futurists’ may help us share vision, or provide insight and understanding, but it is the foundations of ‘now’ that we will build upon.
Specifically, look at where your actions lie: in improving today, or in dreaming about tomorrow.
The reputation of a Social Leader is grounded in their pragmatic action, today, in service of all.
