This week we are talking about sharing, and today, think about vision. Perhaps this is a very typical way to think about leadership - to paint beautiful pictures of the future, and encourage people to subscribe to them?
But as you think about sharing vision, i want you to consider how, as a leader, you create space for people to invest in that vision, to co-create it, or to use it as a studio to build their own version.
Perhaps we can best imagine ‘vision’ as a broad view, a scaffolding, within which the future will be built.
The more we direct the details of the building that emerges, the less space we leave for others - but of course if we let everyone choose what to do for themselves, we may end up with a strange building indeed - possibly one that falls down.
So as we paint ‘vision’, perhaps the role of the leader is to navigate the relationship between structure and creativity, between structure and space? And to be mindful of when we have too much of one, or the other.
