In the two years since i was last in the Netherlands, i’d forgotten that the Albert Hein Supermarket does not take Visa cards. This resulted in me carrying my shopping to the customer service counter where i queued (again) to use cash.
I first made this mistake on the day i moved to live in Amsterdam some years ago: the first time i was bemused, and this time i was annoyed.
At myself.
It was one of the little things that slip when we move away from a culture, when our daily reality changes.
I retain the broad understanding, but the details that i do not constantly use are dusty or decayed.
