Day #185

Freedom

We went camping over the weekend: our first trip as a family of four. I’ve always loved the freedom of camping, and have spent a lot of time on long expeditions (and significantly longer on the planning and preparation for those trips).

Many of my early adventures were solo: learning to carry everything i would need for a week or two in my backpack, with a bivi bag to sleep in. Extremely lightweight adventuring where every gram counted!

Later, camping together, and then with our son, the tents got bigger and the approach to camp evolved. Now magic and comfort became prominent with fairy lights and bunting atop a bell tent.

We’ve now ended up with a much bigger setup as the baby joined us for her first night under the stars: i worked out that our gear this weekend weighed almost exactly ten times what my solo backpack did.

But the aim is the same: to carry what we need, to be independent, to be able to travel, and enjoy, new spaces and experiences, together.

Use your sixty seconds today to think about how you are dependent upon the system around you, and what you carry yourself to find freedom.

And whether it differs in an individual or collective perspective?

If you have time, consider how you feel about your dependence on the system, and how that differs from the moments you feel independent and free.
