Day #190

Feelings

Listen to the words that people use to describe the system that surrounds you: we talk about what we ‘believe’, how we ‘feel’, we ‘think’ that things are different. Sometimes we ‘hope’ that something will be achieved.

At other times we use different language, where we ‘direct’ action, ‘demand’ accountability, or ‘measure’ change.

For me, this speaks to our leadership at the intersection of systems: between the formal one (which can easily be counted, measured, directed) and the social one (which acts predominantly as a fluid structure of belief).

Use your sixty seconds today to consider in which part of the system you lead: in one, the other, or both.

Is leadership all encompassing, or different in those different spaces? Would it be possible to excel in one, but lack capability in the other? Is leadership contextual, or specialised, or fluid?

Or does it depend on what we think, feel, and believe?
