Yesterday i ran a session around ‘The Roots of Story’, where we explored how we are both empowered by stories, but also can be trapped within them. As part of the session i invited people to share a story of their ‘self’, a story of their foundations.
These were powerful - in fact it was one of the most powerful, harrowing, and humbling sessions i’ve run. I felt emotionally drained afterwards. Many of the stories from this group were so far from my own experience that it was almost unrecognisable. People sharing stories that had formed them: stories of war, loss, love and persecution, sometimes all within one narrative.
Just listening to them was hard: sharing them must have been harder.
Authenticity comes at a cost.
