Day #210

Expectations

I have a big day tomorrow, with three sessions that i’m facilitating. Because this is paid work i feel some pressure to perform well - to hold the space and share the ideas that are worth ‘money’. But i wonder if that will make me do my best work?

In spaces like this one, i feel i can be uncertain, curious, even disconnected and wrong, with relative ease (i should say that i am extremely grateful to those of you who have been able to support this work through subscription - but i hope you won’t mind me saying that i still don’t consider this as ‘paid’ work!).

Perhaps i feel accountable in different ways? Certainly i feel accountable to you not to waste your time, but i don’t feel that i have a specific obligation to perform in a certain way - the way that you expect - and so i feel more free.

Use your sixty seconds today to consider the circumstances in which you do your best work - is it when you are ‘performing’, or do you have other spaces or communities in which you can act differently?

And if that is the case, is our role, as Social Leaders, sometimes to ensure that people have a range of spaces to operate within? And if so, how would you know which space you are in, and what the expectation is?
