Day #242

Rules, Boundaries, Permission

An early start today, as my three year old summoned me to play. Once we were settled in, i started to write on the iPad and he offered to help and tried to type, but i said that only papa was allowed to touch the iPad. There followed a long conversation where we ran through every person we knew, establishing who was, or was not, allowed to do my work for me.

This was a conversation about roles, rules, and boundaries: something that is not visible from the outside, cannot be ascertained simply by looking at the system, but has to be taught or discovered. Who has permission to do what?

But the very socially moderated nature of these spaces and permissions leaves them liable to confusion, or error.

Are you fully aware of your own space of rules and permission?

Use your sixty seconds today to consider something you are not allowed to do, and ask whether that constraint is held in a rule, an understanding, a perception, a formal or social boundary?
