Day 427 - Welcoming

Choreography and Engagement
1

It’s River’s first full week at big school, and so far i think it’s going well. I asked him about it as we walked in, and he said ‘i like it, but i don’t love it yet’.

Well: fair enough. Best not to commit too early.

When we join something new, we typically find our way, and a big part of what we value is the choreography of welcome that we receive. Indeed, in the ‘Landscape of Communities’ research this was the single most important factor that people associated with the success of a community.

This caution, and our ability to read the social cues of acceptance (or risk) are valuable.

Use your sixty seconds today to consider how you welcome people, especially beyond the formal rituals.

And if you hold seniority, consider how you welcome ‘down’.
