I’m reading a book by a potter about how he developed his practice: he describes a process of enthusiasm, insight, and discovery, over time. As i read it, i had a predictable response.
First i was enthused about the act of creation, imagining “what if i gave that a go…”
Next i became daunted as he described his experiences of the challenges, and how long it took him to find his art. I started to think “i wish i’d tried this when i was twenty, so that by now i’d be good”.
Finally, he talks about how he found his voice, and can now express with it, rather than copying others. And i realised i will never be a potter.
Which left me wondering what my craft is.
