Our rambling Victorian house is charming, but largely uninsulated, once you’ve left the fireside, so I invested in a new hot water bottle. This proved to be more of a decision than expected, as they ranged in price from £10 for three, through to a toasty £69 for one (admittedly very fluffy). I opted for the sensible middle ground of £6.99 for one, but with a woollen cover, and when it duly arrived was pleased to note that it was not simply a ‘hot water bottle’, but was, in fact, a ‘PREMIUM hot water bottle’.
Closer inspection revealed that it appeared to be identical to our other hot water bottles, the label notwithstanding. Although it was a very nice label. A heavyweight silver card with careful print declaring it’s primacy. In my more cynical moments, whilst boiling the kettle, it occurred to me that perhaps the label was a lie. That in fact all hot water bottles are largely equal, except for the decoration and label.

Reminds me of the recent controversies around the new Jaguar branding - huge investment of time, energy and money and I'm still intrigued about what's behind the label. Now off to think what means for me . . .
