Some days I am the master of circumstance, and on others it overwhelms me. Yesterday was the latter, and hence Day #706 is a day late… I just got swamped.
It’s ok to have good and bad days. My more recent Social Leadership work has included the idea of ‘Imperfect Leadership’, exploring that a key skill is not simply to aspire to be perfect, but rather to be in a dialogue with our imperfection. Not to judge it, or ‘fix’ it, but to recognise that the tide comes in, and flows out. Some things just don’t stay still, and our leadership may be one of those things.
Use your sixty seconds today to consider where you stand: are you the master of the tide, or are your feet wet?
As I’ve slipped into nautical metaphors, it’s worth remembering that King Canute believed his power would let him stop the tide, and humility was imposed upon him.
To accept our imperfection would be a folly, but to be in dialogue with it makes it part of our practice.
