Day #803 - Storms
Predictability and Chaos
The first of the autumn storms have pruned the trees: sometimes just leaves, for others whole branches. Overnight the landscape is cluttered and changed.
Storms are chaos agents, unpredictable and acting upon everything in their path, but at a macro level, at the landscape level, they act as part of a cycle of renewal.
Every tree that is felled brings light to the forest floor, sparking the contest for the recently fallen seeds.
Under an ecosystem approach, we consider all factors: our deliberate action, and the chaos of nature, the fixed landscape structures, and the creatures that roam around them. We are connected between the fixed and the fluid, and both within, and beyond, intentional action.
Part of the humility in leadership is to reflect upon, and accept this: that we can hold purpose, and have agency, but also are at the mercy of the system, in both it’s deliberate and random effects. Hence our strength must be dynamic, fluid, in motion, not fixed
