I try to listen just to understand rather than to judge or evaluate but depending on the situation it doesn’t come naturally and I often forget to do it!

You know, when i wrote ‘Quiet Leadership’, for every draft up until the final one it was called ‘Imperfect Leadership’, as a recognition (almost a celebration) that we are all imperfect, but our acceptance of this, and willingness to be ‘in practice’, to be reflective, is what matters! Hope you’re well Anne and thanks for the great writing that you share.

Hi Julian, I hope all is well in your world.

I'm not sure if you have come across the 4 levels of listening fro Theory U,

Level 1: Downloading

Listening from your habits, from what you already know; the result is you re-confirm what you already knew.

Level 2: Factual

Noticing something new, something that differs from what you already knew or expected to hear.

Level 3: Empathic

Listening from the place the other person is speaking from, experiencing/sensing an emotional connection.

Level 4: Generative

Connecting to the emerging future - to a future possibility that links to your emerging self; to who you really are.

The is an assessment tool and video that introduces the concept.

Happy days!
