I’m unashamedly proud today: i had a note from school to say that River had been kind. In a lesson on the planets, he had used paper plates to show others how the planets moved, and explained to them how to use magnets to move them.

I’m unsurprised that i’m proud: in my own research on pride, belonging, and belief, i see that people are most often more proud of the the achievements of others within their tribe, than they are of their own personal achievements. And at four years old, i’m easily swayed by his actions.

Use your sixty seconds today to consider who you are proud of.

And why? What does it give you, or them? Do you ever share it?

I’m reminded that my own father, with whom i had a deeply loving relationship, nonetheless in my memory only once told me he was proud of me. Or possibly he said it often, but this one occasion seared itself into my memories. It was at the end of an expedition, when i called him to say that i had been successful, and he told me he was proud. Possibly because he himself had been an Outward Bound instructor in his youth, and somehow this adventure aligned a part of us that had not shown before. I don’t know why, but perhaps i regret not asking him.
