It’s cold today: minus ten when i cycled River to school, so i decided to quickly light the fire before starting work.
So i emptied the ash, swept out the hearth, cleaned the glass and dried it, cleared the mortar that had come down the chimney, realised i needed more kindling, so chopped some of that and got more firewood in. At this time of year you have to let the wood acclimatise inside for a while before you try to light it. When it’s frozen, you get a sultry fire.
Which all took longer than i imagined.
Use your sixty seconds today to consider this: what are the small jobs that take time.
The things you do regularly, that have to be done, but that eat up your time.
But without which, you cannot have the joy of the fire.
