Day #543 - Driftwood

Between ‘Self’ and ‘System’

I carried a piece of driftwood home from Sweden (despite some odd looks at the airport!). You can see traces of the original paint on it, almost scoured away by the action of the sand and sea over time.

The driftwood is at the mercy of the sea.

It reminds me of the language of ‘self’ and ‘system’. The self - you and me - are very small, and our systems can seem overwhelmingly large. And yet we are not without power.

An individual, with intent, purpose, community, can find voice. And a voice may be carried and amplified. We can act locally, but our reach may be more broad. If we are in a community of purpose, of practice. Whilst we may, ourselves, not have global power or control, the ideas that we shape may do.

In a real sense, the way that you lead creates ripples in the system, at scale.

Use your sixty seconds today to consider the ripples that you make. How far do they travel?
