My friend Susie is in a band. They’ve just put out a single that’s doing really well. I’m incredibly proud of her.
It’s a funny thing how pride works: when i researched this a few years ago, we saw that people were more often proud of what people in their trusted groups achieved than in their own achievements. We like to see our friends and comrades do well, and we tend to enjoy supporting them in their efforts.
Use your sixty seconds today to consider how you spend your pride. On what, or whom.
I should stress that people also take great pride in their own achievements, it’s just that pride is a typically communal force, and we tend to be louder about it when it’s for other people (which probably relates to humility).
