When we talk about Culture, we often indicate that it is ‘good’ or ‘bad’ (or in the worst cases, that it is ‘toxic’).

Sometimes we conflate these things - good and bad - with what we ‘like’ or ‘dislike’. And often we generalise from the specifics of our own experience. I think we have a ‘great’ culture, and hence if you view it as toxic, the issue is with your perception, not the reality.

The problem lies in that it’s hard to imagine an absolute measure of Culture, as it’s a socially constructed phenomenon. Hence always subjective, or visible only through shadows.

Mayne the trick is to recognise the subjectivity, and lean into it.

So, use your sixty seconds today to consider what your culture is like: good, bad, or something else?

Then consider how many other people would share your view: a few, some, or all? Or perhaps you simply don’t know.

The point of this reflection is to allow us to question the generalisability of our own experiences, and to force us to put a value on the experience.
